The Power's Out in the Heart of Man
We sang a song of raindrops turning to gumdrops when we were kids, blissful in our blindfolds. And we decided to try it on for size; all we got were mouthfuls of tears. I remembered those times, and thinking I’d changed enough to manipulate precipatory tendencies (as well as the time/space continuum), I stood on an empty street. The torrential downpour closing in on my face, angry drops splashing against my fleshy cheeks and bony cheekbones. Mouth hung open, head tilted upward to face the sky, I stuck my tongue out to catch as many as I could. Some smacked my beard; most hit the tip of my tongue, pulling Greg Louganises in their fall to the asphalt (perfect fives). Others I swallowed, like the words I couldn’t say, refused to say. I retrieved a cup, one of the red plastic ones, and it started to be filled. Clear, saline so-lution turned to scarlet, the blood falling from my tongue cut from biting so hard. It re-minded me of an energy drink, so I put it to my lips and drank. Drank it all.
